Three Reasons to Choose a Cosmetic Dentist in the UK and Not Go Abroad

Many people still believe the old adage that the grass is greener on the other side, but rarely is this proven to be the case. But, when seeking the services of a cosmetic dentist, there is more than just the disappointment of unsatisfied expectations at risk. Cosmetic tourism has a host of serious factors that one should always consider but which are often skimmed over by people attracted by the combination of perceived low cost dentistry and and foreign holiday. Taking to foreign fields provides no guarantee about costs or quality of holiday. The skills of any particular foreign dentist may well be high, and facilities at this clinic impressive, but when being treated by a dentists abroad there is always a question mark over what happens once one returns home. After all, one does not go to Budapest to have a tooth pulled, but to have more serious procedures done, like cosmetic dental implants, for example. A host of dental services are available at perceived lower prices, such as veneers and crowns, but it is worth noting that caution is always advised when considering going abroad. Here are four reasons in particular why one is perhaps better off opting to stay at home. The Real Costs There is no coincidence that the industry is called cosmetic tourism, as a hotel is often made use of. A patient will typically need to recouperate after a surgical procedure, and usually will stay for about seven days in a hotel close to the clinic where the procedure took place. Depending on the particular surgery, a patient may have to stay even longer. What this means is that, apart from the cost of flights, there is also the cost of staying in a hotel for one or two weeks. This is not always so enjoyable as ones diet is typically restricted after a procedure and a considerable amount of discomfort can ruin much of what should otherwise have been a holiday. It is worth noting that when the costs are added up, the actual savings made on dental treatments abroad is actually very little. While it does depend greatly on what treatment is received, the chances are the fortnight holiday is a break away that would never have been otherwise taken, leaving a certain question mark over the necessity of the venture at all. Health Risks The second issue to consider is the risks there may be to ones health. Clinics can look perfectly fine from the pictures on their website, but once a patient allows a dentist to begin a procedure, that patient places all of his or her trust in the dental surgeon. If the facilities are not up to scratch, there may be a question over the sterility of the implements used, and in turn a higher risk of infection. Stories of botched jobs are not uncommon, and the result for a patient can be serious infection, a considerable amount of pain and, in some cases, permanent damage that other cosmetic procedures may only be able to hide to a limited degree. Answerability Which brings us to the issue of answerability. If something should go wrong, the task of gaining compensation is very complex. Chasing a legal issue over international borders is not a simple matter and requires an expert in the area. This will likely cost even more money. So, if one should get cosmetic dental implants, for example, and they should be screwed to the jaw incorrectly, then the surgeon may never be answerable for the poor job done, while the local dental association may prefer to sweep the matter under the carpet. The problem is that going to a dentist abroad creates a logistical problem that does not exist within the UK. When researching a dental service abroad, it can be very difficult to get a clear picture over the internet. Their website is going to be positive, and the ability to visit the place to get a feel for it is non existent. However, in the UK checking out the reputation of a clinic and of the cosmetic dentist working there, is not difficult. One can simply contact the British Dental Association to find out if there have been issues with a particular practitioner. The fact there are strict standards laid out by the BDA, is another good reason to opt for a UK dentist.
